Court editorial misses mark
Regarding the Feb. 2 editorial by Bloomberg View, I agree Neil Gorsuch should get a fair shake, but blaming the GOP for “trashing an important Democratic norm” in holding up Obama’s Supreme Court pick is utterly false and laughably hypocritical.
The standard was set numerous times previously by the Democrats – i.e., Sen. Chuck Schumer in his July 2007 speech, “We should not confirm any Bush nominee, except in extraordinary circumstances,” and Sen. Joe Biden in 1992 when he was the chairman of the Senate Judiciary Committee, stating President George H. W. Bush “should consider following the practice of a majority of his predecessors and not name a nominee until after the November election is completed.”
Switching scenarios for the 2016 Supreme Court battle, does anyone think Harry Reid would have followed this editorial’s viewpoint? The editorial put the onus on the GOP when Democrats have staunchly ignored and reversed filibuster policy on for years.
Speaking of filibuster, the GOP refrained during hearings for Democratic nominees Elena Kagan and Sonia Sotomayor, and Bill Clinton’s appointees Ruth Bader Ginsburg and Stephen Breyer.
