Help with civility

Congresswoman Cathy McMorris Rodgers recently wrote a heartening opinion piece for Time calling for civility and respectful dialogue in the political process. I completely agree with her statement that “We’ve forgotten how to listen to each other, and how to come together for productive conversations.”

But for civility to become a reality, all people need to be truly heard and reassured that politicians actually listen to them and factor their views and needs into your decision making. Otherwise, protest is the only option. I notice that the congresswoman has not set forth any specific ideas for how to actually have productive and inclusive conversations.

I suggest we facilitate small conversations between the congresswoman and other civic leaders and elected officials of different political persuasions to get deep into policies, values, differences and shared goals, and that they be recorded and broadcast in order to prompt wider discussions.

I think it would be a great project on which both parties can work together. As chair of the Spokane County Democrats, I would do everything possible to make it happen.

The congresswoman has a unique opportunity to start the healing process. If she means what she wrote, I stand ready to help.
