Testimony: ‘Not the right time to be making changes to our Constitution’

More than 20 people have now testified at this morning’s hearing on SCR 108, the constitutional convention resolution on a balanced budget amendment, all opposing it. Only the presenters of the bill have spoken in favor. Here are some more of the comments:

Suzanne Stone said, “I’m afraid that right now is not the right time to be making changes to our Constitution. Our country is in turmoil right now.” She quoted the late Supreme Court Justice Antonin Scalia, saying, “A constitutional convention is a horrible idea - this is not a good century to write a constitution.”

Adrienne Evans said, “Once you open up the door to a convention, you could change anything in the Constitution.”

Judith Lombardi said, “My family has been in this country and has fought for this country since 1787, and this Constitution has stood us well.”

Hawk Stone said, “A constitutional convention isn’t conservative, it’s radical. … This resolution is a threat to our way of life, and it’s a bait and switch. No matter how attractive the bait, and a balanced budget is a pretty attractive bait, please don’t take the bait.”
