Reasons to fear Trump
Mike Wolfe’s recent letter claimed that comparing Trump and his supporters to Nazis was “histrionic gibberish” because Trump’s unlikely to start a new Holocaust. Wolfe is right that the comparison’s invalid, but we still have plenty of room to point fingers.
Having never served in public office, Trump was “elected” (not by popular vote) on a wave of populism, the lowest common denominator of democracy. He’s already distinguished himself as the most unprincipled and unethical person to be president-elect, full of bilious corruption that taints all who voted for him.
These are not ad hominems: he publicly admits that force and ruthlessness are more important than principles and aligns himself with murdering tyrants like Putin. And he is, like Hitler and Mussolini, clearly a fascist, relying on a toxic cocktail of personal charisma, force, money, nationalism, corporate thinking, demonization of minorities, disrespect for democracy and cult-like supporters.
Sadly, it’s time to resurrect the old warning slogan “It Can’t Happen Here” and keep an eye out for Brownshirts. And in the spirit of democratic accountability, never forget or forgive what those who voted for Trump did to us on Nov. 8, 2016.
