Scripture and politics

The response of Rod Foss (Jan. 7) to Chris Larson’s letter (Dec. 31) indicates that what’s even worse than Republican and Democratic candidates all claiming to be Christian in the beginning of our recent election process, and then exhibiting behavior of the most contemptible fashion I’ve seen in my years as an American citizen, is people who use Scripture as proof texts for their own narrow agendas.

Rod Foss not only quotes Titus 3:5 incorrectly, he obviously overlooked the conversation Jesus had with Nicodemus in John 3. Both texts clearly elevate “the water of rebirth” (what Foss denigrates as “ceremonial sprinkling”) and “renewal of the Spirit” (the gift of faith) as the means by which people enter the Kingdom of God.

Perhaps more comprehensive biblical research is in order before judging the faith of others and their faith affiliations under the guise of “Christian ethics.”
