Debate income tax
In a Jan. 8 column, Sen. Mark Schoesler wishes: “… we debate the income tax openly and honestly, so that the people understand what really is at stake.” I agree.
Washington is one of seven states without an income tax. We have some of the highest sales, gasoline and business and occupation taxes in the nation, and with an income tax we could also reduce real estate taxes.
The sales and gasoline taxes hit middle class and poor the most, while the B&O taxes and regulatory compliance costs hurt small and medium businesses. The math has been done by very good people, a 5 percent income tax, perhaps 8 percent to 10 percent on unearned income over $1 million, can replace the B&O tax, and cut the sales, gasoline and real estate taxes significantly.
This will provide more funding for making every single one of our schools excellent and provide much more stable income for planning efficient government. Sen. Schoesler, though I do not agree with all of your political views, there is one answer. I too would love to see this debate, as I think reasonable people would agree this is a better way.
