Heads-up CPD Blue nabs 2 in car-jack, burglary try
At approximately 8:45 a.m. today, Coeur d’Alene Police Officers responded to several vehicle burglaries that had just occurred. With a possible vehicle description, Officer Gus Wessell was able to locate the suspect vehicle near the intersection of Northwest Blvd. and W Ironwood Drive.
When Ofc Wessell attempted to stop the vehicle, the driver, later identified as Dwight J Higgins, sped away. The SUV Higgins was driving crashed over the guardrail as he was trying to turn onto the westbound I90 on-ramp at Exit 11. After sliding down the embankment, the SUV became stuck in the snow. Both Higgins and the female passenger, Victoria V Calloway, fled on foot. Higgins ran to an occupied vehicle that was stopped at the Conoco gas station, 1750 W Appleway, and broke the window trying to get inside. Two citizens witnessed what was happening and were able to detain Higgins until law enforcement arrived. Calloway was also located at the gas station. Both were taken to the Coeur d’Alene Police Department.
After being interviewed, both Higgins, 22, of Fort Lauderdale, Fla,, and Calloway, 22, of North Lauderdale, Fla., were arrested and taken to the Kootenai County Jail. Higgins was booked for three counts of Burglary, Robbery, Eluding, and Leaving the Scene of an Accident. Calloway was booked for three counts of Burglary and Criminal Conspiracy.
