Archives: Why not license children?

After he served as police chief and city administrator of Post Falls, the late Cliff Hayes was elected Kootenai County clerk. Here, he is shown being sworn in as county clerk on Jan. 10, 2011. As a police chief, Hayes once suggested that cats be licensed. (SR file photo)

From the annals of Huckleberries (25 years ago, July 13, 1992):

The suggestion by Police Chief Cliff Hayes that cats be licensed in Post Falls brought a tongue-in-cheek proposal from Councilwoman/cat lover Karen Streeter. She suggested the town also require licenses for kids: $25 for females, $15 for males, and $5 for redheads (either sex). In a letter, the redheaded councilwoman astutely observed: “Most communities suffer more problems from children than cats.”

Q: Would you rather see children licensed that cats?
