The Slice: Just in case it’s not obvious

Elaine Dahl-Campbell received a recall notice about her car this week.

It dealt with a defective door latch. But the notice’s last line had her shaking her head.

“A door that opens while driving increases the risk of injury.”

Good to know. Let’s move on.

On the appeal of sleeping outdoors: Coeur d’Alene’s Richard Simpson and his wife spent several days camping in western Canada on their honeymoon. That included one memorably cold, wet, mosquito swarming night in Banff.

“Forty-four years later, we are still together, and we still enjoy the great outdoors. However, we haven’t been camping since that fateful night.”

When Jan Miller’s daughter Lori married husband Andrew this spring, his vows included this passage.

“… love you faithfully through good times and bad … even if that means going camping.”

Said Jan, “We’ll see how that turns out.”

Re: Tuesday’s Slice: “So glad you brought this laugh-producing tabloid subject to light,” wrote Judy Waring. “My all-time favorite headline was ‘Baby born singing Christmas carols.’ ”

And John Kenney shared what he said was his favorite. “Nude Skydiver Devoured by Ravenous Owls.”

If those stories had appeared in the S-R, the newborn would have been born belting out “White Christmas” upon arrival and it would have been marmots that fed freely on the nude outdoors buff.

Visiting her childhood home: “I grew up in a large Victorian style house, complete with a wrap-around porch, near downtown Coeur d’Alene,” wrote Marilyn Frei. “My parents paid $8,000 for it in 1947 and sold it last year for over $500,000. It has been completely refurbished and for a number of years now it has been a vacation rental.”

She continued. “My son booked it for the weekend of my birthday last year and invited my siblings, my other children and their families to join us. It was a wonderful experience to stay there again. But the high-end makeover was just not the same as the cozy home where my dad and mom, a humble mill worker and a homemaker (who were lifelong CdA residents), raised six children.”

Today’s Slice question: What’s the most you would be willing to pay for a concert ticket?

Write The Slice at P.O. Box 2160, Spokane, WA 99210; call (509) 459-5470; email pault@spokesman.com. The question was about who around here wears sunglasses most, but Emil Wunderle couldn’t help but wonder when was the last time anyone saw actor Jack Nicholson’s eyes.
