JBelle: ‘Our Lady G’ doesn’t help gallery
JBelle (RE: Our Lady of Disagreement triggers controversy in CdA ): “I agree with Father that his does not accurately represent the genre of Day of the Dead. And the name of the piece, “Our Lady G and Me” boldly exemplifies the introduction of himself that the artist makes in his artist’s statement on his website: ‘My sculptures are a direct physical manifestation of my inner thoughts and moral struggles.’ In this piece, I see an expression of the artist’s struggle with faith and with women. Art and business are two distinct disciplines. However, if you ignore one, you will not be successful in the other. At this point in their business cycle, I don’t think Art Spirit needs this kind of dust up to usher them into the new era of the gallery. I think Art Spirit needs to gather their friends at the moment; keep the old, make the new. I’m not sure they will be successful in doing that by putting this provocative piece in the window. It is, of course, their choice. I surely wish them well.”
