Questions about Avista sale

Why should Avista be sold to Canada? Why would we want our public energy company controlled in a foreign country? Oh, but some would argue, that can’t happen. It can’t? The company is subject to the laws of Canada. What control would the Washington Utilities and Transportation Commission have over the laws of that country? The simple answer is: none. What if Canada nationalizes and takes over the company? Why don’t we form a Public Utility District so we, the ratepayers, own the company for our benefit?

We learned that the company will continue its charity and economic development programs in this area. How is it bound legally to do that? Why are my energy costs based on the charity and economic development programs of its choice anyway? Don’t I have the right to decide to give my money to whatever program(s) I choose? Is that taken from me much as it is through my payment of taxes that go to programs obtaining more votes for politicians?

Although it is a good deal for the stockholders, there are questions here that need answers. Who will address them? No one? My guess is it will be “business as usual.”
