Thanks for WWII articles
Thanks to Rachel Alexander for her fine Memorial Day article featuring World War II submariner Tom DePew at the Tolling of the Boats lost at sea. I have fond memories of singing the Navy hymn “Eternal Father” at Submarine Base Chapel at Pearl Harbor. The last verse was: “Bless those who serve beneath the deep/Through lonely hours their vigil keep/May peace their mission ever be/Protect each one we ask of Thee./ Bless those at home who wait and pray/For their return by night or day.”
Thanks also to Jonathan Glover for his June 6 feature. The beautiful quilt behind Clarence “Willie” Houser at the Spokane Veteran’s Home reminiscing on D-Day 73 years ago reminds me of a presentation of a Quilt of Valor to another World War II vet – 98 years old, Christmas 2016. I noticed he had a hat embroidered with “Make America Great Again.” What a privilege to honor these men who always say, “I was just doing my job.”
Two weeks ago, 36 women veterans were each presented with a Quilt of Valor for their service. While they were being honored, one responded to the presenters, “Thank you for keeping the home fires burning.”
E pluribus unum.
