Riverside State Park trails still largely plugged with snow

TRAILS — In recent years, lowland hiking trails have been free of snow and welcoming the feet of hikers and runners by March.  This year, crusty snow is still greeting recreationists anxious to get off skis and snowshoes and onto terra firma.

Despite rain and then sun today, even Riverside State Park trails are iffy this week, as noted in the photo above taken this morning by Sue Niezgoda at the park’s equestrian center. She reports:

The snow is still too deep on many trails in Riverside to run efficiently! But when has a hard workout ever stopped me?

Beautiful morning in the Equestrian Center! This run was a slog but the sun and views were so good for my soul!

Scabland areas west of Spokane, such as BLM’s Fishtrap and Hog Canyon lakes are basically snow-free today, but expect to find muddy areas for awhile. The Escure Ranch hike to Towell Falls should be fine.

UPDATE

Fishtrap Lake area is still very wet with standing water on portions of the trails, according to report from Eric Wesselman who was out there today. He recommended rubber boots. He also warned that trees from the Watermelon Fire are still snapping and dangerous, especially on a windy day.
