We are the law
We are the mob. Our constitution and the laws that flow from it are a river of torches. These can help us move forward or ignite self-destructive conflagrations. We are the law.
Though imperfect, laws aim at being just and humane. We no longer make a circus of executions, lynchings and floggings, nor do we tar and feather miscreants, though some richly deserve it. I wouldn’t beat a cowering dog, though some would. They might enjoy bringing pain and humiliation. Fear in a mother’s eyes would stay my hand though raised in justice, just as the gaze of my creator would do.
My lowly ancestors came here to work so that a wretch like me could become a teacher. When you see the light in the eyes of students whose minds fly open, you don’t care if they are named Aieda, Maria, Jeshua, Thomas, Giuseppe, Mohamed, Denzel, Mohandas, Diana, Phoung, Akira, Diomedes or Helen.
I would prostrate myself before my lord but he would lift me up and show me the way to curb my mob-like behavior. There is an old American song called “The Dodger.” Look it up because we are all in there. Please pray for guidance.
