Hypocritical Nate gets Trib Jeer

In his Cheers & Jeers column this week, Opinion Editor Marty Trillhaase/Lewiston Tribune gives JEERS … to state Rep. Ron Nate, R-Rexburg:

Combining two acts of hypocrisy in a single episode takes some doing.

Even in politics.

But for Nate - who teaches economics at the Mormon Church-owned Brigham Young University-Idaho - it’s just another day at the office.

For some time, Nate has made a point of voting against a lot of spending bills on the grounds that money should be allocated for teachers. Of course, that stance allows him to have it both ways. He can claim to be pro-teacher while voting anti-education. He turned thumbs down on virtually everything else in the education program - items such as administrators, building maintenance and school bond reimbursements, counselors and the state School for the Deaf and Blind.

All of which burnishes Nate’s credentials with his conservative base. Last year, for instance, Nate and Rep. Heather Scott, R-Blanchard, compiled the highest scores on the Idaho Freedom Foundation’s voting index.

But Nate got tripped up Tuesday when the microphone at his desk stayed hot. He was overheard saying: “We all know our districts. We know that there are some teachers that are clearly overpaid.” Full post here (2nd item).
