Open ears to Steves

In the March 13 Spokesman-Review, Barbara LaBrosse criticizes Rick Steves for “getting political” during a travel talk sponsored by KSPS. To navigate our complicated world smartly, and to be educated voters, we need all the help we can get. Every one of us takes in information daily, unwittingly or consciously. The decisions we make as to news sources, books to read, or people to listen to is very important. Traveling also may offer many new insights.

We had the privilege a year ago to hear Rick Steves do a very comprehensive program on Israel and Palestine, filled with information and balanced views, also reflecting his personal impressions. That could be called political and valuable.

I think it would be hard to find a better person to learn from than Rick Steves, at least about Europe, where he has traveled more than most of us, and it’s been his business for years. He’s worth perking up our ears and taking it to heart. Congratulations to KSPS for sponsoring him, and also for providing us the balanced PBS “News Hour” daily.
