Mind closed on climate
Apparently, David H. Greegor (“Omitting science standards means erasing truth”) is one of the new breed of scientists who focus on an agenda rather than on discovery.
He states, “The existence of truth is in peril” and “Truth has become a villain…” Professor Greegor should be reminded that issues of truth are the province of philosophy and religion. Science deals with the testing of hypotheses and formulation of theories. Scientific discovery involves critical thinking, questioning, retesting and yes, debate.
“What debate?” and “There is no debate,” are disappointing remarks from a scientist. A closed mind and adherence to an agenda are not helpful in finding answers. While castigating “deniers,” Professor Greegor fails to recognize himself as a proselyte.
Surely, Professor Greegor agrees that in science there are many questions and few answers. When a science phenomenon is accorded the status of “law,” debate may subside. Until then, to suggest that “truth” is established and that debate is closed, smacks of dogmatism. In essence, Professor Greegor is saying, “If you do not agree with me, I don’t want to hear from you.” No, humankind’s role in climate change is a large and complex issue. Let the debate continue.
