Right thing to do
I agree with others that universal medical insurance is not a constitutional right and that we are obligated to pay for those who can’t afford it. Actually, that’s fundamental communist doctrine: “From each according to his ability, to each according to his needs.”
Communist apologists often conflate this with Christian theology from the Bible, Acts 4:32-35, in which believers who had possessions sold them and gave the proceeds to those who had needs. The fundamental fallacy in the comparison lies in the motivation. Communists confiscate from the makers to give to the takers. Christians (and others) choose to give to those in need.
So compassion leads me to consider the plight of those who can’t afford health insurance. Our country and economy are also better off with a healthier population. To pay for it, Congress could enact a 1 percent personal FICA payroll tax with an employer match. In the context of overall tax reduction, individuals and businesses would still receive large tax breaks. Furthermore, the Supreme Court has already approved such a tax.
So spare us the demands and “rights.” Universal health care is not a right. But it is the right thing to do.
