Davenport special to family

I loved the article by John Webster on the Davenport Hotel and the role the Friends played in helping to save it. Looking back, I wish I had gotten involved with the Friends of the Davenport because the hotel holds a special place in my family’s history. My grandfather, Mel Fewel, owned a Buick dealership back in the 1920’s in Lewiston, Idaho. My dad told me stories of coming to Spokane as a little boy with his dad once a year to display his cars in the Davenport Hotel. Dad said he got to run free in the hotel while grandpa tried to sell Buicks!

I will be forever grateful to the Friends and especially to Walt and Karen Worthy for not only saving such a great hotel, but for actually making it better than ever. Whenever we have out-of-town visitors, we take them to the historic Davenport Hotel and they are always impressed.
