Archives: Higgens not Higgins

Huckleberries has been fighting the battle to correct the spelling of Higgens Point for a long time. How long, you ask? On May 11, 1992, this item appeared in this column:

The North Idaho Centennial Trail will extend as far east as HIGGENS Point — Higgens with an E, says descendent Bruce Higgens of CdA. For years, many have played fast and loose with late Uncle Mel Higgens’ last name. Mel Higgens was a well-known CdA chiropractor who bought the point near Blue Creek, five miles east of town before WWII and later was forced to sell it by state transportation officials planning the new Interstate 90 route. He and his siblings were surnamed Higgen at birth and later added an “S” but didn’t replace the “E” along the way.
