Thoughts about citizenship

We recently attended a U.S. Marine Corps Boot Camp graduation ceremony at Parris Island, SC. Five hundred and seven young people, including 70 women, met the very difficult expectations for success.

The procedures became especially meaningful when a small group of recruits received recognition for their efforts. Seventeen graduates from around the world enlisted in the Corp, survived 13 weeks of grueling challenges and earned their American citizenship.

As they recited the Naturalization Oath of Allegiance, I thought how easy it is for most of us to become American citizens - just by being born here. I could not help but wonder if more of us would appreciate this special gift if we had to work for it.
