‘13 Reason Why’ important

The popular Netflix series “13 Reasons Why” has sparked conversations and has been said to cause more harm than help. The show deals with sexual assault, bullying and Hannah’s suicide. Many people think the show can lead to more attempts rather than preventing them.

As someone who can relate to events Hannah went through, I can say it did anything but make me want to end my life. When I watched Hannah’s suicide scene, I promised I would never harm myself in any way. It brought a reality on what it’s like after your death, and how many people are affected.

Many scenes in the show are hard to watch, but there are trigger warnings, and if people are sensitive to certain topics, they shouldn’t watch it. The show’s writer, Nic Sheff explained in an interview why they didn’t shy away from Hannah’s suicide. At the end, he said, “And so I stand behind what we did 100 percent. I know it was right, because my own life was saved when the truth of suicide was finally held up for me to see in all its horror — and reality.”
