Praise for firefighters
In the early morning of Sept. 14, a catastrophe occurred that was largely unreported because of other events in the news that day. Shortly after midnight, I called 911 as we watched a wildfire racing up the hill toward our home on the corner of Assembly and Deska. The fire started at our neighbor’s home to the north, completely destroying it, and turned into a roaring blaze as the trees and grassland caught fire.
Because of the magnitude, our Fire District 10 enlisted help from Districts 8 and 9. Airway Heights, the DNR, the city of Spokane, and Fairchild Air Force Base. I cannot say enough good things about Fire Chief Scharff and all these firefighters and the cooperation among them.
While we spent the night in our car, watching from a distance, dozens of firefighters saved our home and two others. For several days and nights, there was always a crew on the scene, combing the woods and fields for flare-ups. Fighting a fire such as this is a science; all knew exactly what they were doing. The professionalism, organization and hard work of all involved deserve to be recognized and praised.
