We need change of heart

Events of the past two weeks are a microcosm of the increasingly violent world in which we live. There is gun violence, racial prejudice (which is practiced in some manner or another by every ethnic group), and injustice, to name a few of the things that make for a dangerous existence. Each incident of these troubles brings the inevitable chorus of folks calling for what they think are the solutions to our problems: we need stricter laws, we need bigger, more intrusive government, we need more money spent on this problem or that, and so on. And though all of these have been tried with minimal effectiveness, we still keep going back to them.

The problem is that they only address the symptoms of society’s ills while ignoring the core problem, which is found in the heart of each one of us. What is needed is a fundamental change of heart in each person. The problem is further exacerbated by the fact that our western culture has essentially either marginalized God to insignificance, or denied his existence at all.

Jeremiah 17:9 says, “The heart is more deceitful than all else, and is desperately sick; who can understand it?” Until we deal with that, nothing will change for the better. Man has demonstrated his inability to change himself, we must return to the One who can change the sinful human heart.
