Support for Monroe

I’ve been watching a handful of businesses on North Monroe try to convince Spokane our neighborhood doesn’t want the road project. Those business owners represent a small minority. Few, if any, live in Emerson-Garfield where residents want an end to the horror show.

My 5-year-old’s introduction to death came when her kindergarten classmate was killed on Monroe. I’ll never forget the silence as stunned parents gathered our babies from a teacher who controlled her own grief to support her surviving students.

One reason my family chose E-G was to walk to our favorite restaurants, stores and parks. Instead, we must leave our own neighborhood to shop, eat and play. It’s too dangerous to cross the street, let alone park. Exiting your car is a game of chicken, with vehicles whizzing inches away. Doors have literally been ripped off cars.

Those who oppose the project are misleading the public by ignoring the existence of plans developed to support businesses during construction and an impact study showing the benefits, not to mention overwhelming support from residents and businesses in E-G.

Thank you, Candace Mumm, and other City Council members supporting this project.
