Ask the hard questions
Our belief turned out to be illusion. It did happen here: school shooting; death of one student; injuries to three more; arrest of the alleged shooter; shock and pain reaching into the Freeman community and the region.
Responses of students, Freeman staff, parents, first responders, Freeman community and the region at large were immediate. Coming together, overriding their fear - literally saving lives, supporting and protecting those deeply affected. Freeman Strong was born.
Dr. Russell, Freeman, superintendent, and Shawn Vestal, S-R columnist, each from their unique perspectives, spoke and wrote addressing the complexity of the situation. Both understand the natural responses: Why? How could this happen? Why did no one see this coming? How can we protect our children? Who’s responsible?
Answers, friends and neighbors rest in us. Begin with courage: look in the mirror, ask hard questions. Next - search for, struggle with, and answer the call. Can we talk with one another with open minds and hearts to explore new possibilities. Commit honestly, struggle with complexity, resist the tendency to finger point blame and judge outwardly. Can we transcend as Dr. Russell and Mr. Vestal have? Can we begin again for the sake of our children, our communities?
