100 percent renewable Spokane
Kudos to 350Spokane.org and Environment Washington for sponsoring a gathering of concerned citizens with their City Council representatives last Wednesday evening at the Saranac Community Building.
The purpose was to determine the steps needed to pass a resolution committing the city of Spokane to using only 100 percent clean, renewable energy by 2050. At a time when federal support for clean energy seems unlikely, it is encouraging to see cities across this nation exercising good judgment by committing completely to a clean energy future. These visionaries see a great opportunity to improve the health and quality of life of their citizens and the resilience of their communities, all while creating robust economic opportunities for the region they share. It was exciting to see Spokane seriously considering joining their ranks.
From my perspective of the meeting, it seemed all attending were in basic agreement: Spokane needs to commit itself to this great happening. I would encourage the parties to polish up the language and pass a resolution without delay. In this one act, the city of Spokane will put utility companies on notice they either transition from fossil fuels to clean renewable energy or risk losing one of their largest customers.
