Watching lawmakers’ votes
How wonderful that the Spokesman-Review Sunday edition has an important section which briefly summarizes many of the bills and votes of U.S. senators and representatives in our area, titled, “How Your U.S. Lawmakers Voted.”
This information is valuable to read, as much of it is not reported in the regular articles of most papers or over TV or radio. What surprised me in this past issue (April 15, 2018) was that our representative of the 5th District, Cathy McMorris Rodgers, voted to oppose a bill for a floor debate that would protect Social Security and Medicare from cuts to balance the budget in a constitutional amendment.
There are other very important bills and votes covered, such as one on the Volcker rule. Often our politicians do not always vote the way they present themselves, so this gives the informed voter a wonderful source to understand the current political climate in the country today.
Several years ago on KYRS, Thin Air Community Radio, I reported weekly with similar content to this section. It was well-received, but the funding for the Local Radio segment ended, along with the program.
Thank you so much, Spokesman-Review, for offering this very important section.
