Time for major league
Mayor Condon wants Spokane to play “Minor League” (soccer). That’s it?
Spokane has been gazing away from a “Major League” opportunity for a long time: a CFL franchise housed in Joe Albi Stadium.
Support? The numbers that packed the Shock games are just an appetizer. We are close to B.C., Calgary and Edmonton. The CFL has nine teams and they badly need a tenth team to even out the league.
The CFL plays June to November. So, the EWU diehards can support Bo Levi, Nichols, Vernon Adams, JC Sherritt and others, here as professionals. Not just alumnis. At one point, 33 percent of the starting quarterbacks in the CFL were Eastern Eagles.
The rationales are many: Canadian tourism, a thriving Joe Albi, Spokane’s identity and pride all ramp up.
Put Brett, Rypien (our favorite Canadian), Andy Billig, Condon and Eric Sawyer and local CFL veterans in the same room for a “Major League” chat. Or, we can follow Mayor Condon back to the “Minors.”
Seattle can stick their football … on another tee.
