Women role models
In reading “First Avenue owner bringing women together over coffee and F-bombs,” (Aug. 22), I was dismayed that the owner of First Avenue Coffee is proudly creating a venue for women (patterned after a Seattle group) wherein attendees can “drop F-bombs, very casually, not in anger.” She goes on to say, “They’re women who don’t hesitate to drop F-bombs — or need to learn not to hesitate to drop F-bombs.”
Really? One should not hesitate to drop F-bombs? Tell that to a teacher, a co-worker or a road construction worker and see what response you get. The article intimates that speaking freely with expletives brings strength and credibility, and engaging in a group where one feels safe to throw out “potty words” is the way to empowerment.
At a time where popular superheroes in media portray courage, justice and fight for rights, the new Spokane superpower for women is profanity? No, strong women are not swayed on moral ground; they are role models of refinement, kindness, hard work and conviction. Those are the real super powers — and the ones I want to teach my children.
