Take back our city

A councilwoman chains herself to people protesting the laws and civility supported by the people of Spokane. She postures as a friend of the disenfranchised, while using them as a prop to support her run for a more influential seat on the Spokane City Council. Despicable. Then her “supporters” occupy the City Council Chambers on Monday night to demonstrate and bully anyone testifying against the lawlessness that permeates the downtown area.

As a society we need to take care of those unable to take care of themselves. We have a duty to hold responsible those whose actions are disrespectful, aggressive and inappropriate, demanding special treatment because they consider themselves a protected class.

Lately, the downtown corridor is something to be avoided. Aggressive panhandlers, homeless folks obviously in need of assistance, and the prevalence of camps, coupled with a fear of an unwanted confrontation, keep many people out of our city center.

The “homeless” problem requires compassion, empathy and structure. Too many of us lack the determination to demand respect and a modicum of demonstrated responsibility from those camping in our streets. If they are unable to comply with societal expectations or laws, we have a duty to take care of them. But if they want to confront authority, and resist the help and support provided to get them off the streets, we need to effectively convince them otherwise.

Spokane city government needs to take back our city!
