A better revenue source

Gov. Kasich is a moderate Republican by contemporary standards (“Deficit spending can’t be ignored,” Dec. 15). His article on deficit spending is consistent with the view many Republicans had maintained for years.

Many of different political stripes agree the basic problem is spending too much. If I spend more than I earn then I have a problem with two solutions: I can spend less or earn more.

It is no different for government. We cannot voluntarily reduce our income - taxes - for the corporate world and the well-to-do on the pretense that it will generate more income. Less is less in any equation. Claiming the remedy lies to a substantial amount in reducing Social Security and Medicare is misleading. These are two well-funded government programs that succeed in achieving their objectives. These are not entitlements since we all pay into these funds long before using them. People on Social Security tend to spend that payment as there isn’t much surplus there.

Might I suggest to all who support Mr. Kasich’s view that they add in an additional corrective action, collect more revenue from those who received an unnecessary tax reduction. Last time I checked those savings weren’t being spent on growing our economy.
