Every man to be armed

Thank you Jeff Hall for your guest opinion Feb. 4, 2018 (“It’s time ‘that every man be armed’). A very well-presented and fact-filled presentation. I absolutely agree with you on all points and your background gives added credibility to the points you make.

I too, am retired law enforcement and worked for a sheriff’s office in somewhat of an outpost position and saw some bad and a lot of good people making bad decisions. At that moment in time, when a good or bad decision is made becomes the trademark of mental stability or illness. It is too bad mental health awareness and treatment have all but gone away, which I believe contributes to the rise in misuse of what I always viewed as a tool (gun of any type) to commit horrible acts of violence.

Consider if it was mandated that each adult was required to serve two years active military service, what an impact this might have on the abuse of the aforementioned (tool) firearms. All adults would receive tracing in proper use, cleaning, safe storage and marksmanship. A policeman’s gun is like a carpenter’s hammer or mechanic’s wrench: just a tool you hope never to be used.
