The Dreamers, do what is right

Time is running out on the Dreamers. These are the 800,000 young people who were brought to the U.S. as children. President Obama issued the DACA executive order which temporarily permitted Dreamers the right to work or study. I have met many of these young adults in my college classes. They are hard workers.

On September 5th, President Trump rescinded DACA. He said he liked the Dreamers and was giving Congress six months to establish legislation to provide permanent status for the Dreamers.

As a follower of Jesus, my faith urges me to welcome the stranger and love my neighbor as myself. Each Dreamer is made in the image of God and should be received into our hearts and lives. In addition, most Americans agree that these young people deserve their shot at the American dream. In a recent poll, 86 percent of U.S. citizens want Dreamers to be allowed legal status.

In our best moments, our country has been a place that new immigrants could make into their home. Let’s continue that legacy and give Dreamers the legal status they need.
