Tax cuts
I am very frustrated over the recent “tax cuts” that have become law. So here are a few hypothetical scenarios to illustrate my frustration. I wonder about the wisdom of tax cuts at a time when our country is about 20 trillion dollars in debt. If we could begin paying off this debt at the rate of a dollar per second, it would take about 700 years.
Imagine if all of America’s “one percenters” were suddenly to lose all of their income for six months. Would we even notice any repercussions? Now, imagine if this happened to all hourly wage earners. Would we experience a collapse of our economy?
The proponents of these tax cuts say they are doing so to stimulate the economy. Why should a professional athlete receive much more in cuts than all of the employees of a Walmart combined? Wouldn’t it, on purely economic reasoning and ethical grounds, make more sense to make these tax cuts available to the Walmart employees? Don’t forget that all of these monies would eventually work their way back into the coffers of the “one percenters,” doing much to stimulate the economy along the way.
Scientists say that Earth was formed about 4 1/2 billion years ago. That seems like a long time to me. But there are now many people who have a dollar for every year Earth has existed, and soon for every day. When greed and corruption become acceptable, common sense and decency take a back seat. But that’s a lesson we learned in World History 101.
