Wealth beyond economy

There is in politics a phrase coined some time ago that avers, “It’s the economy, stupid.” We are all grateful to live in times of a robust economy. But there are many kinds of wealth. Money in the pocket is an important consideration, but it is only part of human wealth.

Human dignity is a form of wealth. To feel respected and well-regarded is important to human wellness. A culture that disregards considerations of dignity and morality can become as bankrupt as a nation that becomes financially distraught.

To inflict moral injury on others robs the human spirit, it causes a poverty that money cannot address. To denigrate people, classes, race and countries does not further the cause of human wellness.

As a culture it seems that our bank account in the single measure of our worth. As important as it is, it becomes hollow if it furthers injury, rejection and abuse.

Whether we speak and act as an individual or as a head of state, we are responsible for conduct that dignifies the human spirit.
