U-District bridge name

Pertaining to the naming of the bridge article Monday (“Name this bridge,” Jan. 8) by Nicholas Deshais.

Perhaps a more detailed account of all suggestions would have been more appropriate so as to inform the public of where public sentiment about the bridge really lies as opposed to a single reporter’s opinion.

I say it is the opinion of many that it is a bridge to “nowhere” simply because the south end of the bridge does end up in old Hookerville which today has hardly any foot traffic in the area. Too, there exists very heavy traffic between Division to the west and Hamilton to the east and traffic between the freeway to the south and the railroads to the north, and so who from the University is going to use the bridge for going to that area?

Much less than $12 million would be better spent on a footbridge crossing Brown Street at Pacific Avenue because that area is saturated with traffic and people mixing.

How about two years from now do an article on how many use the bridge — whatever name is chosen — because not too many graduate students are in the market for a new boat, car or tractor.
