Grant Elementary students an example
Dr. Martin Luther King is remembered and honored with school assemblies, marches and church services. As a volunteer and resident in the Grant neighborhood, I attended the student-centered event using Dr. King’s words “I have a dream…” as the theme.
Student leaders facilitated. The sea of student faces includes Native Americans and students of European heritage, whose families came to the United States generations back. Newer arrivals, including the last year, come from around the globe. Some of the countries include Vietnam, Marshall Islands, Eritrea, Ukraine, Ethiopia, Iraq, Pakistan, Mexico and more. Others have physical and/or developmental challenges. Each one, and their families, embody the greatness of the U.S.A.
Students representing each grade shared their dream for Grant School. Some of their ideas are for everyone to be treated with respect, all students to be successful, bullying to disappear and to get good grades.
Grant Drummers and Dancers performed dances from Africa in traditional outfits. Singing “We Shall Overcome” together while holding hands, closed out the assembly. Grant students are developing leaders. Let us follow them for they are our hope, our future.
