Won’t resort to conflict
Regarding the article “Civility isn’t always right path to take” by Shawn Vestal, July 4.
No, Mr. Vestal, I will not. I will not resort to conflict even if I know my deeply held moral beliefs are not shared by others. I will not resort to insurrection even if I know beyond all doubt that particular actions taken by my fellow citizens are repugnant. I will not resort to conflict no matter how much my position is heckled, derided, mocked and scorned. I will not resort to conflict even though there are human rights violations every day, and approximately half of Americans consider these violations perfectly acceptable.
Mr. Vestal, I will listen with an open mind to positions other than my own so that I may understand nuances which were not previously clear to me. I will understand that people on both sides of particular issues consider their positions just and moral. I will continue to hope that those who are blinded by their own ideology, like you, are just a vocal minority. I will continue to be hopeful that open-minded debate, civility, and a genuine gratitude for the progress we have made for civil rights and freedom take the day this Fourth of July.
