Pre-existing conditions common

As the current administration attempts to extinguish advances made under the Affordable Care Act, current emphasis is on removing those advances that maintained medical coverage for individuals with pre-existing conditions.

There is public misunderstanding regarding what constitutes a pre-existing condition. Many assume that only serious diseases like diabetes or cancer are in that category. If you are over age 45, have seen a physician in your past and have a medical record you very likely already have a pre-existing condition! Any medication, same result. A single elevated blood pressure recording in a physician’s office would allow insurance companies to raise your rates or reject anything related to blood pressure, such as headaches, dizziness, chest complaints, or a stroke.

Any abnormal blood chemistry might do so as well, like elevated cholesterol, a thyroid study, sodium or potassium levels. Any excuse whatsoever will give insurance companies the ability to place you in a higher rating category or reject coverage.

Any physician will tell you that such events are commonly recorded. Your medical record is public access to your insurance carrier. The ACA made sure these egregious coverage practices were disallowed. The current administration is actively pursuing their return.
