Madsen takes light to Allsup

In her column on June 9th (“Headlines on ‘hate marcher’ hyped up?”), Sue Lani Madsen tried to distance the Republican Party from Whitman County precinct committee officer James Allsup and his racist beliefs. She attacked the headline writers for using the word “elected,” called Allsup a knucklehead and a punk as if he were merely a mischievous teenager, and quoted local and state party officials condemning white supremacy.

Unfortunately, she did not mention the real evil promoted by President Trump, an evil celebrated by Mr. Allsup when he reminded his racist supporters in a YouTube video that they were defended by the president in his press conference after Charlottesville.

In referring to Allsup, she wrote that the “Republican Party will neutralize him before his term begins in November.” Could be -but even if some Republicans believe a racist can’t be a precinct committee officer in Whitman County, it seems that many believe a racist can be president of the United States.

Ms. Madsen doesn’t think that neutralization will get headlines, but I hope it does. It will serve as a reminder that the GOP continues to enable racist views by refusing, on a national level, to stand against them.
