McMorris Rodgers’ mission
“In historic week, McMorris Rodgers passes 3 bills,” was the headline of our congresswoman’s February 9 newsletter, just below her tag line “proudly representing Eastern Washington.”
The contents describe two worthy budget act add-ons signed into law, and the House-passed “Common Sense Nutrition Disclosure Act,” intended to alter an as-yet-unimplemented 2014 set of FDA regulations affecting fast-food restaurants, convenience stores and groceries. One wonders how nutrition disclosure regulations rose to become an issue of historic importance in Eastern Washington.
This bill is one of several campaigns by McMorris Rodgers to take regulatory authority away from “overreaching” executive branch agencies like the Food and Drug Administration for relocation to the “accountable” Congress. Her actions are part of a broad attempt by free-market fundamentalists to reconfigure governmental checks and balances to be more favorable to unrestrained self-interest.
Rather than being our representative in Washington, D.C., McMorris Rodgers is a missionary sent by the free-market-fundamentalist church to enlighten the natives of the 5th District.
