No more lies

Reading all the letters accusing the “other side” of lying, I fear for us and our country’s future.

A lie is a deliberate untruth — saying a thing is true though we know it is false. Repeating that lie in our own belief that it is true, because so-and-so said so, is not a lie, it is a mistake.

However, respect for self and others demands that we question what is said. Ask for evidence, ask for reasons, for what was stated as a truth. Do not simply repeat; while doing so does not make you a liar, it does make you mistaken. Often enough and you may be though a fool, a dupe. Always be prepared to give your reasons for believing what you have heard stated. Not all Democrats lie, nor do all Republicans or Independents. Let’s be rational, and civil, and open to other ideas. Please, for the sake of us!
