Who runs Hydro One?
The sale of local utility Avista to Ontario Canada’s Hydro One will be a major event for our region if it’s approved by state regulators. Nearly 2,000 employees. Over 1.6 million people living in their service area.
It’s been widely reported how the Ontario government kicked out the entire board of Hydro One. The Canadian Press reported “A new board of directors is in place at Hydro One just over a month after the partially privatized utility’s chief executive and entire board resigned amid pressure from Ontario’s Progressive Conservative government.”
What hasn’t been widely reported is news of how the citizens of Ontario, Canada’s largest province, overwhelmingly tossed out their government, replacing it with one that ran against all subsidies for alternative energy sources. New candidates tapped into consumer anger over electricity bills that had gone up more than 70 percent!
With all the politics influencing the approval of the Avista sale, including their new solar projects in Eastern Washington and its ownership in Montana’s Colstrip generation plant, it would be good to learn more about how the citizens of Ontario are influencing management of Hydro One.
