Support renewable energy

I am writing to support both Washington state and Spokane’s City Council in their efforts to move forward with clean energy and fight dirty coal energy. As a Christian, I think our collective health, the environment and climate change are moral issues because of their effects on God’s creation and all human persons, especially the poor of the world.

With the proposed changes of the Trump administration, the Environmental Protection Agency is not reducing pollution, is not protecting public health and is not promoting clean air and water. In fact, by EPA’s own admission, hundreds of thousands of lives will be impacted negatively, hundreds of lives lost and billions of dollars wasted; but they are attempting to move ahead with this plan anyway.

It’s time to start moving resources from outdated fossil fuels to new, more productive and less-polluting energy sources. Montana’s Consumer Counsel reports coal-generated electricity to cost $73 per megawatt-hour versus wind power’s $31 per megawatt-hour.

I am confident the people of Washington will support our Gov. Inslee’s move to fight pollution inherent in the coal industry and the City Council will lead Spokane into a future of economic development of clean renewable power.
