Denigrating heroes

Dallas Garrison (“Trump good to the military,” July 20) stated that he spent 20 years in the USAF. He goes on to say that President Trump has been good to him due to the fact that he received higher pension raises under Trump as compared to Obama. He certainly deserves the pension.

He also goes on to talk about how Trump avoided the draft and the fact that Clinton also was able to stay out of the military. Clinton of course received many criticisms for that avoidance. People such as John Kerry were also criticized even though he did serve in Vietnam. I believe it had something to do with being shot in the rear and his anti-war discussions after his discharge from the Army.

As a USAF veteran (1970-1974), I have no problem with people my age who did not serve. What I do have a problem with is Trump’s statement that John McCain was not a hero because he was captured. Does he mean that all of the American soldiers that were captured are not heroes? Anyone who agrees with that statement as far as I am concerned are not true patriots.
