Cemetery has precedence

In response to “Spokane Gun Club eyes potential West Plains site” (July 23):

This article in the Spokesman regarding the Spokane Gun Club’s request to alter the no-shooting regulation on Thorpe Road near Medical Lake failed to make comment about this historical cemetery right across the street.

This proposal does not give consideration to the legitimate nonprofit, rural cemetery that has served the community and area for 130 years. There continue to be current burials and every day there are mourners at this cemetery. A major gun club hardly seems compatible with the peaceful needs of a cemetery.

The Medical Lake Cemetery has been there since 1888, with veterans going back to the Civil War. The founders of the community are buried there. Last year the state of Washington listed this cemetery on the Washington Heritage Register. It seems to us the cemetery has precedence over a new gun club location.
