SPS budget convenient

As a taxpayer without children, I always follow the school board articles, as over 50% of my property taxes pays for them. I do not understand why taxpayers have to foot the bill for parents of elementary-age children because the district decided on early release on Fridays.

“The district also recommended spending $230,075 for after school activities…The funds would cover staffing, snacks and supplies for an estimated 50% of students district wide.” (“SPS budget revision saves more jobs,” Aug. 8). Why? Why does the city not require the parents to take responsibility and make adjustments to accommodate this new development? And snacks? Parents can’t pack a snack if they are taking advantage of that added time?

Most responsible adults would adjust to a change. May not be convenient, or ideal, but is that the taxpayers’ fault? Things happen, life isn’t perfect, and sometimes one needs to make alterations in their job or routine to accommodate changes. Oh yea, maybe it’s okay because it’s someone else’s money that’s paying for that added convenience. Isn’t that nice (for them)?
