Studded tires are safer

I wish Nick Deshais and all the other people who oppose studded tires had been driving the streets I was on this morning (Wednesday, Dec. 11). At best the snow was so packed that it was more like a skating rink than a road. In the worst places it was clear ice and vehicles needed every bit of traction they could get to start and stop.

Yes, studded tires may cause a bit of extra wear on roadways, but the safety factor on streets like I experienced far outweighs that cost in my books. After all, injuries and hospital stays are also very expensive and have significant societal costs.

Let’s spend our money on safety and keep people employed renewing the roads on a regular basis. All of us will benefit all around.
