How did we get here?

How did we arrive at the point where we choose our elected representatives and leaders, not by their policies, skills and character, but by our own level of tolerance for behaviors that we would find unacceptable in any other venue?

We reject leaders in business, education, religion and entertainment for words and deeds as much as 20 years in the past. Yet we seem content to sit and watch members of all branches of our government, regardless of party, commit equivalent offenses on a daily basis.

The Spokesman-Review invites original letters on local topics of public interest. Your letter must adhere to the following rules:

No more than 250 words
We reserve the right to reject letters that are not factually correct, racist or are written with malice.
We cannot accept more than one letter a month from the same writer.
With each letter, include your daytime phone number and street address.
The Spokesman-Review retains the nonexclusive right to archive and re-publish any material submitted for publication.
